Monofocal lenses, which provide vision correction for a particular distance are considered the standard for cataract surgery; however, these lenses do not address astigmatism or provide the ability to see multiple distances. As opposed to monofocal lenses, advanced technology lenses can also correct astigmatism and/or allow patients to have vision across a range of distances. Toric Lens Implants for Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a refractive error in which the cornea (the clear, front part of the eye) is shaped irregularly, causing blurred vision. Astigmatism may occur in varying degrees in each eye and can accompany both nearsightedness and farsightedness. Toric lens implants are placed in a precise orientation to correct astigmatism, which enables a patient with astigmatism to see clearly at a particular distance without the need for full-time glasses.
Presbyopia-Correcting Lens Implants
Presbyopia-correcting lens implants correct distance vision while also reducing or completely eliminating the dependence on reading glasses after cataract surgery. In other words, these lens implants allow you to see at multiple distances without using glasses. Of note, there are also toric presbyopia-correcting lens implants for patients with astigmatism who also want to decrease the need for reading glasses after surgery.
