Advanced Technology Lenses

The leaders for eye care in the Atlanta area since 1971, the doctors and cataract surgeons at Eye Consultants of Atlanta aim to achieve the best for every patient. That includes customizing the life-changing results of cataract surgery.

During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial one, called an intraocular lens (IOL). The standard intraocular lens is a medical marvel that has been in use for more than sixty years, but even more advanced technology developed in recent years greatly increases our ability to improve visual outcomes for more patients than ever before!

Why Choose an Advanced Technology IOL?

Advanced technology lenses offer patients visual advantages beyond the standard IOL by decreasing or eliminating their dependence on glasses or contact lenses after surgery.

The physicians at Eye Consultants of Atlanta are dedicated to staying current with the latest developments in IOL technology. When you come to us for your cataract surgery consultation, we will start by taking the time to examine your eyes before discussing your lifestyle and vision goals to see which IOL would be the best option for you.

Our Advanced Technology Lenses

Monofocal lenses, which provide vision correction for a particular distance are considered the standard for cataract surgery; however, these lenses do not address astigmatism or provide the ability to see multiple distances. As opposed to monofocal lenses, advanced technology lenses can also correct astigmatism and/or allow patients to have vision across a range of distances. The selection of Advanced Technology Lenses that we use at Eye Consultants of Atlanta include:

Toric Lens Implants for Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a refractive error in which the cornea (the clear, front part of the eye) is shaped irregularly, causing blurred vision. Astigmatism may occur in varying degrees in each eye and can accompany both nearsightedness and farsightedness. Toric lens implants are placed in a precise orientation to correct astigmatism, which enables a patient with astigmatism to see clearly at a particular distance without the need for full-time glasses.

Presbyopia-Correcting Lens Implants

Presbyopia-correcting lens implants correct distance vision while also reducing or completely eliminating the dependence on reading glasses after cataract surgery. In other words, these lens implants allow you to see at multiple distances without using glasses. Of note, there are also toric presbyopia-correcting lens implants for patients with astigmatism who also want to decrease the need for reading glasses after surgery.

An Overview of Advanced IOL’s

  1. Toric Intraocular Lenses (IOL’s): A Toric IOL is a type of monofocal IOL that also can correct a patient’s naturally occurring astigmatism in the cornea. When cataract surgery is performed with a standard lens, any pre- existing astigmatism will remain present afterthe surgery. Toric IOL’s compensate for the existing corneal astigmatism.
  2. Presbyopia-correcting lens: Presbyopia-correcting lens implants correct distance vision while also reducing or completely eliminating the dependence on reading glasses after cataract surgery. In other words, these lens implants allow you to see at multiple distances without using glasses. Of note, there are also toric presbyopia-correcting lens implants for patients with astigmatism who also want to decrease the need for reading glasses after surgery.
  3. Light Adjustable Lens (LAL): The Light Adjustable Lens an FDA approved ATIOL that is the only type of IOL can be adjusted and fine tuned to a patient’s eye after cataract surgery. It is a monofocal lens that offers sight at one distance, but offers the advantage of customizing vision results for patients that have challenging ocular histories or anatomy. This ATIOL is a good choice for patients who have had prior LASIK or Radial Keratotomy (RK) surgery in the past. This lens works particularly well in patients seeking monovision and who aren’t interested in having an EDOF or MFIOL.
