Sunday, August 11, 2024, Eye Consultants of Atlanta’s Dr. Hans Andrews appeared as a guest on “The Weekly Check-Up” show on News/Talk WSB Radio.
During the show, Dr. Andrews discussed a variety of topics with host Dr. Bruce Feinberg, such as LASIK eye surgery, cataracts, floaters in vision, contrast sensitivity, and cataract surgery.
Dr. Andrews’s specialties include the cornea, external diseases, refractive (LASIK/related procedures) and cataracts. As a cornea specialist, Dr. Andrews explained, “The cornea is really the windshield of the eye.” While his typical patients can vary from those with eye trauma to corneal ulcers to LASIK patients, Dr. Andrews assured listeners, “I have a bunch of tricks in my tool bag that can help these patients out and do certain surgeries or medical therapies to try to improve their vision.”
According to Dr. Andrews, “Most of the light is actually bent on the eye. So patients often come in and say ‘Hey Doc, can’t you do something with my lens to make my vision better or change that lens inside the eye?’ And of course, sometimes we do that to improve people’s vision, but oftentimes we like to stay on the surface of the eye first before we go into the front part of the eye.” Often, he added, the patients who desire LASIK the most are people who needed glasses as children.
Dr. Andrews also walked the audience through the differences between the whitening of the lens and the change in prescription of the lens from aging. He explained, “As we get older, the lens changes shape. That’s the reason we can’t really see up-close as we get into our forties. After that, the lens actually starts to get a little bit bigger. So, I will be able to tell sometimes if a patient becomes a lot more nearsighted rapidly over a couple of years. I’d say, ‘Oh yeah, I think their cataract is actually starting to get bad,’ even though they may not notice the decreased visual quality from the actual opacification of the cataracts.”
Dr. Andrews also answered questions from callers throughout the show. These questions covered a multitude of ophthalmologic topics, including swelling in the back part of the eye, second eye syndrome, and if LASIK surgery can be performed more than once on a patient
